Install the storage software on a physical server by using the storage software installer.

Storage software installation is automated. Therefore, the installation automatically starts after booting from the storage software installer. Use the BMC web interface windows and BMC remote console to perform this procedure. For physical servers other than Hitachi Advanced Server HA800 series, HA800 G2 series, and HA800 G3 series, see Installing the storage software (for physical servers other than Hitachi Advanced Server HA800 series, HA800 G2 series, and HA800 G3 series).

Notes on the procedure

  • Perform this procedure for each physical server.

  • You can perform operations in parallel on multiple physical servers by opening other tabs or windows on the web browser and logging in to multiple BMC web interface windows.

Steps 1 to 9 of the storage software installation procedure can be performed in parallel on other physical servers.

To perform this procedure on another physical server, open another tab or window on the web browser, log in to another BMC web interface window, and then begin from step 1.

  • For details about how to operate BMC (such as how to display and operate the BMC web interface window and how to operate the BMC remote console), see the BMC User Guide provided by the vendor of the physical server.

  • When you log in to the BMC web interface window, ask the system administrator to specify the login information (host name or IP address, local login name, and password).

  1. Log in to the iLO web interface window from the controller node. If the server is turned on, turn it off. Specifically, click the power switch icon to display a menu. From the menu, select Momentary Press.

You can display the iLO web interface window by logging in to it from the iLO login page. To log in to the window, start the web browser, and then, on the address bar, enter the host name or IP address of the iLO on the physical server.

The physical server is turned off.

    CAUTION:

Before you perform step 2 and later, verify that the server is turned off. If you perform the steps without turning off the server, the setting operation might fail (for example, virtual media is disconnected or the boot order cannot be set).

  2. Before you install storage software, perform an iLO reset once to clear the settings that are unnecessary for this procedure.

In the navigation tree, select Information, and then perform the following procedure in the Diagnostics tab:

    1. In the Reset iLO area, click Reset.

A message asking you whether you really want to perform the requested operation appears in the Reset iLO area.

    2. Click Yes, reset iLO.

After you start resetting the iLO, it takes a few minutes before you become able to log in.

    3. When reset of the iLO is complete, enter the necessary information in Local login name and Password, and then click Log In to log in.
  3. In the navigation tree, select Administration, and then perform the following procedure in the Boot Order tab:
    1. In One-Time Boot Status, verify whether Current One-Time Boot Option: is set to No One-Time Boot.

If Current One-Time Boot Option: is set to No One-Time Boot, go to step 4.

    2. If No One-Time Boot is not set, in Select One-Time Boot Option:, select No One-Time Boot, and then click Apply.

After confirming that Current One-Time Boot Option: changed to No One-Time Boot, go to step 4.

  4. Select HTML5 Console in the menu displayed by clicking the thumbnail of the iLO remote console.

The iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window opens.

  5. Click the virtual media icon at the top of the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window, and then select CD/DVD > Local *.iso file.

Configure the storage software installer (hsds-installer-vssb-<version>-<number>.iso) obtained in the controller node as virtual media, and then connect to the physical server.

    CAUTION:

Do not close the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window with virtual media connected until the procedure described in Installing the storage software (for Hitachi Advanced Server HA800 series, HA800 G2 series, and HA800 G3 series) is complete. Closing the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window after connecting virtual media will disconnect the virtual media. If the virtual media is disconnected, resume from step 4.

If you want to minimize the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window instead of closing it, click the docking mode icon at the top of the window.

If you want to cancel minimization of the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window, in the iLO web interface window, click the window mode icon above the thumbnail of the iLO remote console.

  6. In the navigation tree, select Administration, and then perform the following procedure in the Boot Order tab:
    1. If you are using Hitachi Advanced Server HA820 or Hitachi Advanced Server HA820 G2, set the server boot mode.

In the Boot Mode section, select the firmware to be used when booting the physical server to Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), and then click Apply.

    2. Set the one-time boot option.

Scroll down to the One-Time Boot Status section. Select CD/DVD Drive so that the virtual media is used as the boot device only once. Then click Apply.

    CAUTION:
    • If you are using Hitachi Advanced Server HA820 or Hitachi Advanced Server HA820 G2, set the server mode to Unified Extensible Firmware Interface(UEFI). If you set Legacy BIOS and go to the next step, installation of the storage software does not start because the virtual media is not recognized as a bootable device. If that is the case, reperform the procedure from step 1.

    • If you do not set the one-time boot option or set an option other than CD/DVD Drive as the one-time boot option and go to the next step while a bootable device other than the virtual media is connected to the physical server, the virtual media might not be selected as the boot device and installation of the storage software might not start. If that is the case, reperform the procedure from step 1.

  7. Click the power switch icon, and then, from the menu that opens, select Momentary Press to turn on the physical server.

Installation of the storage software automatically starts. Approximately 10 minutes after the installation starts, the system drive selection window appears.

  8. Select a drive to be used as a system drive.

Click "▼" to show a list of selectable drives.

The following drive information is shown in the list of drives.

    • Device name

    • Drive name

    • Serial number

Select the drive to be used as a system drive, and then select [Next].

When the system drive is in RAID1 configuration and you are using a Smart array controller as a system drive disk controller, HPE LOGICAL VOLUME is displayed for the drive name.

When the system drive is in RAID1 configuration and you are using a MegaRAID controller as a system drive disk controller, the product name of the MegaRAID controller (for example, HPE MR216i-p Gen11) is displayed for the drive name.

When the system drive is in non-RAID configuration, the drive model is displayed for the drive name.

    CAUTION:
    • The serial number is also shown in a drive that uses a Smart array controller and MegaRAID controller, but you do not need to verify this display.

    • If you have inadvertently selected Next with the user data drive selected, power off the physical server. If the selected user data drive has partitions, delete the partitions, and then reperform the procedures from step 1.

    Tip:

If the drive to be used as a system drive is in non-RAID configuration and a drive of the same model as that of the drive to be used as a system drive has been mounted on the server, you might not be able to identify the target drive only by the drive model. In such a case, verify the serial number to select a drive.

When installation of storage software is complete, the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window displays the following console interface screen. It takes approximately 50 minutes until the installation is complete after you select the system drive. If the virtual media is connected, you are not logged out of the iLO web interface window when a session times out.

    CAUTION:

If any of the following messages persists on the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window and the window does not change for a few minutes, installation of storage software might have failed due to partitions in the drive used as a user data drive.

If the user data drive has partitions, delete them and reperform the procedure from step 1.

    Note:

During storage software installation process, two reboots are performed in total. After the first reboot, you might see a "[FAILED]" message on the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) as shown in the following. However, if the console interface screen shown in step 8 is displayed in the end, you can proceed to the next step without any problem.

  9. When installation is complete, disconnect the virtual media.

Click the virtual media icon at the top of the iLO remote console (HTML5 Console) window, and then select CD/DVD > Force Eject Media.

  10. Perform steps 1 to 9 for all the storage nodes.

When you finish the steps for all the storage nodes, storage software installation is complete.
