The following figure shows the volume shredding operation.
As shown in the figure, the shredding operation overwrites the target volume three times with dummy data. The following dummy data is used for each of the three overwrite passes:
- First overwrite: 00
- Second overwrite: FF (default), or a user-specified value from 0 to FFFF (hexadecimal)
- Third overwrite: 00
Note:
- The shredding function should be used when the host I/O load is low. If the number of volumes to be shredded is large, host I/O operations might be affected.
- Maintenance operations cannot be performed on drives used by a volume that is being shredded.
