The capacity saving function includes compression, and deduplication and compression, which are performed by the controllers of the storage system.

When the capacity saving function is in use, data deduplication and compression is performed to reduce the size of data to be stored. Capacity saving can be enabled on DRD-VOLs in Dynamic Provisioning pools. You can use the capacity saving function on internal flash drives only, including data stored on encrypted flash drives and external storage.

If you want to use the capacity saving function, create a DRS-VOL in a DP pool. The DRS-VOL is a DRD-VOL with capacity saving enabled by using adaptive data reduction.

In addition to the DRS-VOL, although you can create the DRD-VOL with capacity saving enabled by using dedupe and compression, use the DRS-VOL. However, only when a snapshot is not in use and high I/O performance in the SMPL (a single volume) status is required, use the DRD-VOL with capacity saving enabled by using dedupe and compression.

If you want to create the DRS-VOL and perform the operations on the DRS-VOL, adaptive data reduction must be installed. To use the capacity saving function, dedupe and compression must be installed.

In the user guides for VSP One Block, if there are no differences in specifications or operations between the DRS-VOL and the DRD-VOL with capacity saving enabled by using dedupe and compression, the volumes are collectively referred to as the DRD-VOL (with capacity saving enabled).
