A pool is created using from one to 1024 LDEVs (pool volumes) of physical space. Each pool-VOL is sectioned into 42-MB pages. Pages in a pool are assigned to store user data and control information. Four pages on a V-VOL are required for the control information. To use Dynamic Provisioning, create a pool. The pool-VOL registered in the pool can be added or deleted even during operation. Before deleting a pool, delete all V-VOLs assigned with the pool.

A pool number must be assigned to a pool. A pool can be associated with multiple V-VOLs. Multiple pool-VOLs can be registered in one pool.

Each page is consecutively laid down on several RAID stripes from one pool volume. The pool's pages are assigned on demand to any of the V-VOLs that are connected to that pool. Other pages assigned over time to that V-VOL randomly originate from the next free page of some other pool-VOL in the pool. Multiple V-VOLs can be related to one pool.

By using VSP One Block Administrator, a pool is created by specifying a drive. A pool-VOL is created automatically, and then the pool is created.
