You can set free disks to spare and spare to free.
Note: This feature is not available for the
following storage systems:
- VSP 5000 series
- VSP G1x00, F1500
If you choose to use the basic method to create parity groups, the software automatically reviews the available spare disks and allocates more spare disks if needed.
If you choose to create parity groups using the advanced method, review the number of spare disks in the parity groups inventory summary. To assign more or fewer spare disks, use disk management.

On the dashboard, click the
Storage
Systems (
) icon.
- Select a storage system, then click Parity Groups.
- Click Manage Spare Disk to open the Disk Management window and view which disks are not used in any parity group.
- Select one or more disks and click edit.

In the Update Disk Status window, set the disks to free
or spare:
- To reserve the disks as spares so that they cannot be used for parity group creation, click Set to Spare.
- To unallocate the spare disks and return them to the pool of available disks, click Set to Free.
- Click OK.
