If you are using external management software, you can add an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) manager to enable alerts about devices in registered storage systems. This option is not required to monitor hardware in Hitachi Ops Center Administrator.

When an SNMP manager is added, it collects information from SNMP agents that are installed in components of registered storage systems. The storage systems send traps to Ops Center Administrator using SNMP v3.

Note: Ops Center Administrator manages such alerts automatically, for processors, memory, disks, power supplies, batteries, ports, caches, pools, and fans.

Ops Center Administrator uses SNMP v3 to send traps to external management software as soon as they are received. The structure of the traps is defined in a MIB file and Ops Center Administrator uses its own MIB file to add information to traps received so that the trap is easier to understand. It is important to import the Ops Center Administrator file to access the additional information. The Ops Center Administrator MIB file is included in the product installation media.

The SNMP manager enables you to do the following in the external software:

  • Determine whether there are any problems with storage system components or whether the status is normal.
  • Identify the specific component that in warning or critical status.
The following types of components can be monitored:
  • Processor
  • Memory
  • Power supply
  • Battery
  • Fan
  • Physical drive or disk
  • Port
  • Cache
  • Pool

SNMP management needs the following:

  • External management software capable of receiving SNMP alerts.
  • SNMP agents must be configured in the storage environment.
  • The Ops Center Administrator MIB file has been imported to the SNMP manager.
  1. Click Settings and select SNMP Settings to open the SNMP window. Click the plus sign (+) to open the SNMP Manager Management window. You can also update an existing SNMP setting by clicking the pencil icon.
  2. Enter the following details:
    • Name: up to 32 characters.
Note: If you are editing an existing SNMP manager, Name cannot be edited.
    • Username of the SNMP manager
    • IP Address: of the SNMP manager.
    • Port: Positive integers from 0 to 65535. are allowed.
    • (Optional) Privacy Protocol: You can choose from the following:
      • No Privacy: No privacy protocol.
      • DES: Data Encryption Standard.
      • TRIPLE_DES: Triple Data Encryption Algorithm
      • AES_128: Advanced Encryption Standard.
    • Privacy Password: If you choose a privacy protocol, you must enter a password.
    • Auth Protocol: If you choose a privacy protocol, you must also select an authentication protocol. The choices are MD5, SHA, or No Auth.
    • Auth Password: If you are using an authentication protocol, you must enter a password.
  3. Click Submit.
Note: If you want to receive SNMP alerts from storage systems, first you must enable SNMP3 on the storage system, then restrat the Ops Center Administrator server so that the Ops Center Administrator is added as an SNMP trap destination.
A job is created to add or update an SNMP manager.

Example

The following images show the difference between a trap with the MIB file imported and a trap without the MIB file in use.
