You can set free disks to spare and spare to free.

Note: This feature is not available for the following storage systems:
  • VSP 5000 series
  • VSP G1x00, F1500

If you choose to use the basic method to create parity groups, Ops Center Administrator automatically reviews the available spare disks and allocates more spare disks if needed.

If you choose to create parity groups using the advanced method, you should review the number of spare disks in the parity groups inventory summary. To assign more or fewer spare disks, use disk management.

  1. On the dashboard, click Storage Systems.
  2. Select a storage system, then click Parity Groups.
  3. Click Manage Spare Disk to open the Disk Management window and view which disks are not being used in any parity group.
  4. Select one or more disks and click edit. The Update Disk Status window opens.
  5. Click Set to Free or Set to Spare. Selecting Set to Spare reserves the disks as a spare disks so that they cannot be used for parity group creation. Selecting Set to Free unallocates the spare disks and returns them to the pool of available disks.
  6. Click OK.
