When setting up an alert on the resource, you must know the data collection interval of its metrics, because the criteria are set based on the data collection interval.

You can set an alert for a metric based on the number of samples for a multiple of the collection interval. For example, if the data collection interval of a particular metric is 5 minutes, you can set alert with a criteria of 1 sample out of 5 minutes, 2 samples out of 10 minutes, 1 samples out of 10 minutes, and so on.

To identify the data collection interval of a particular metric, do the following:

  1. In the left pane, go to Reports > Build.
  2. Click the Create Using Query Builder option.
  3. In the Create Using Query Builder window, let's identify the data collection interval for the Total IOPS metric of the LDEV resource that belongs to the Hitachi Storage System serial number 421358.
    1. Select the Resource Group and Resource that you want to query.

In this example, we will select the Hitachi Enterprise Storage resource group and the Storage System resource.

After selecting the resource group and resource, the Resource, and Filter options are enabled and a message to drag and drop the Filter or Resource is displayed.

    2. To add the filter, drag the Filter icon as follows:

The Enter Filter Details box is added next to the Select Resource box.

    3. Select the Filter. Metrics corresponding to the selected resource are listed. You may have added multiple Hitachi Enterprise Storage system probes. So, select the Serial Number metric and then enter 421358 in the like box.
    4. To find the collection interval for the Total IOPS metric of the LDEV resource, you must add the LDEV resource. Drag the Resource icon as follows:

    5. Select the Hitachi Enterprise Storage resource group and LDEV resource.

    6. Drag the Filter icon and select the Total IOPS filter.

    7. Click the icon to exclude the Storage System resource, as displayed in the following screenshot:

    8. Click View Result.
    9. In the View Result window, hover over the metric name under Legend.
The current data collection interval of the metric is shown in seconds. For example, in the following screenshot, the collection interval is 300 seconds (5 minutes).

So, you can define the criteria for the Total IOPS metrics as follows:
      • Correct:
        • 1 sample out of 5 minutes
        • 2 samples out of 10 minutes
        • 3 samples out of 25 minutes
        • 1 sample out of 10 minutes
      • Incorrect:
        • 2 samples out of 5 minutes
        • 1 sample out of 1 minutes
Note: If you have set incorrect alert criteria, then delete the existing alert and add a new one. For deleting the existing alert, see Managing alert definitions.
