Use the following guidelines and suggested steps to help resolve boot order issues.

Condition:
During a compute firmware upgrade, after the I/O cards are upgraded, restoring the boot order might fail intermittently. The Tasks page displays the following message:
Failed to upgrade compute <server_address>. Failed to restore original boot order.
What it Means:

The boot order settings must be reapplied from either the default BIOS template or a custom BIOS template.

Corrective Action:
  1. Power on the server.
  2. Navigate to the Compute page and select the server.
  3. Click the BIOS tab.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • From the Summary sub-tab, apply the default CI template.
    • From the BIOS Template sub-tab, create a custom BIOS template, and then apply it to the server from the Summary sub-tab. See Creating a BIOS template.
  5. Wait until the Apply BIOS setting task successfully completes.
  6. Log on to the vCenter, and then exit the server from maintenance mode.
Note: When you apply the default template on HA800 series server models, verify that the boot order devices mentioned in the template are available on the server.
