You can create global-active device pairs in a server-cluster configuration, where the servers are located at both the primary and secondary sites. The primary storage system connects to the primary site server, and the secondary storage system connects to the secondary site server. The cluster software is used for failover and failback.

  • Verify that there is replication between the primary storage system and the secondary storage system using the Storage Navigator.
    • Verify that there is a physical connection between the primary storage system and the secondary storage system.
    • Verify that the quorum disk is created and available on both the primary storage system and the secondary storage system.
  • Verify that the primary storage system is onboarded to a primary UCP system and the secondary storage system is onboarded to a secondary UCP system.
  • Verify that hostgroups are created on the primary site storage system for the primary site host (pHost) and the secondary site storage system (VSM) for the secondary site host (sHost).
  • Verify that a primary logical unit (P-VOL) is presented to one or more hosts or host groups.
  1. Browse to the storage system where you want to create a global-active device pair.
  2. Select either:
    • Datastores: From the Action menu of the datastore (P-VOL) that you want to replicate, select Enable GAD Replication.
    • Replication Pairs: Click Create GAD.
  3. From the GAD configuration list, select Server Cluster. To the right of View GAD configurations, click Server Cluster to view a diagram of the server cluster configuration.

  4. Enter the primary logical unit (P-VOL). The P-VOL is preselected if you enabled replication of the datastore in the Datastore inventory.
  5. Select the secondary UCP system where the secondary storage system is located.
  6. Select the secondary storage system.
  7. Select the secondary storage pool.
  8. Configure the secondary server. Select one of the following options:
    • Server: Select one or more servers from the Secondary Server list.
    • WWN: Select this option if you don't have a server onboarded. Enter one or more WWNs, and then click Get Host Groups.
  9. Select one or more host groups on the secondary storage system to connect to the secondary server.
  10. For the consistency group, select one of the following options:
    • No consistency group ID: select this option, and then select a Quorum Disk.
    • New: select this option, and then select a Quorum Disk.
    • Existing: select this option to display the consistency group ID.
  11. For ALUA mode, choose Yes or No to apply the ALUA mode to the logical unit.
  12. Click Submit.
    An S-VOL is created on the secondary storage system and presented to the selected hostgroups. A path is created between the S-VOL and the secondary server, and a global-active device pairing is then created between the P-VOL on the primary storage and the S-VOL on the secondary storage.
