You can create global-active device pairs in a cross-path configuration, where the primary site and secondary site servers are connected to both the primary and secondary storage systems. If a failure occurs in one storage system, alternate paths are used by the host to switch I/O to the paired site.
- Verify that there is replication between the primary storage system and the secondary storage system using the Storage Navigator.
- Verify that there is a physical connection between the primary storage system and the secondary storage system.
- Verify that the quorum disk is created and available on both the primary storage system and the secondary storage system.
- Verify that the primary storage system is onboarded to a primary UCP system and that the secondary storage system is onboarded to a secondary UCP system.
- Verify that hostgroups are created on the primary site storage system for the primary site host (pHost) and for the secondary site host (sHost).
- Verify that host groups are created on the secondary site virtual storage system (VSM) for the primary site host (pHost) and for the secondary site host (sHost).
- Verify that a primary logical unit (P-VOL) is presented to one or more hosts or host groups.
- Verify that the primary volume (P-VOL) is presented to the secondary site hosts.
- Browse to the storage system where you want to create a global-active device pair.
- Select either:
- Datastores: From the Action menu of the datastore (P-VOL) that you want to replicate, select Enable GAD Replication.
- Replication Pairs: Click Create GAD.
- From the GAD configuration list, select Cross Path. To the right of View GAD configurations: click Cross-Path to view a diagram of the cross-path configuration.

- Enter the primary logical unit (P-VOL). The P-VOL is preselected if you enabled replication of the datastore in the Datastore inventory.
- Select the secondary UCP system where the secondary storage system is located.
- Select the secondary storage system.
- Select the secondary storage pool.
- Configure the primary storage and secondary storage host groups:
- For the primary storage host groups, select one or more preferred paths, if any.
- Select one or more secondary storage host groups, and then select one or more preferred paths, if any.
- For the consistency group, select one of the following options:
- No consistency group ID: select this option, and then select a Quorum Disk.
- New: select this option, and then select a Quorum Disk.
- Existing: select this option to display the consistency group ID.
- For ALUA mode, choose Yes or No to apply the ALUA mode to the logical unit.
- Click Submit.
An S-VOL is created on the secondary storage system and a path is created between it and the primary server, and another path is created between it and the secondary server. A
global-active device pairing is then created between the P-VOL on the primary storage and the S-VOL on the secondary storage. The paths between them are created, and the preferred path is set as indicated.
