To dynamically set the following environments by using environment variables, use the environment setting command RSSETENV.
  • Whether the system logger service is used to collect event logs

  • Settings for using environment configuration commands and cataloged procedures

  1. Execute the following RSSETENV command.
    START RSSETENV,PARM='parameter=parameter-value'
  2. Use the RSDSPENV command as follows to confirm that the environment variables have been specified correctly:
    START RSDSPENV,PARM='DETAIL'

Example of executing the RSSETENV command

  • When specifying whether to use the system logger service to collect event logs

START RSSETENV,PARM='LOGPUT=LOGR' (if using the system logger service)

START RSSETENV,PARM='LOGPUT=SAM' (if not using the system logger service)

Tip:

This setting is invalidated if an IPL is performed again. Perform either of the following in case you need to perform an IPL again the next time:

  • Add the RSSETENV command to the COMMNDxx parmlib member to automatically set the environment variables when an IPL is performed again.

  • For the IEASYMxx parmlib member, specify the system symbols so that the statically-registered settings will be used the next time an IPL is performed.

Note:

Environment variables are shared by MAR, Business Continuity Manager, and Tiered Storage Manager for Mainframe. Therefore, you must be careful when setting environment variables in an environment where Business Continuity Manager or Tiered Storage Manager for Mainframe is installed.
