You can create a GAD consistency group to manage replication pairs between the local and remote storage systems. The process includes connecting to the remote storage system, configuring pair settings, selecting primary volumes, and assigning secondary volumes.

Note:

VSP One Block Administrator supports only automatic configuration when creating GAD pairs on virtual storage machines. When a GAD pair is created using VSP One Block Administrator, the virtual storage machine is automatically configured. When troubleshooting, you must first identify whether the GAD pair was created using the automatic configuration or the manual configuration.

For details about the global-active device function and troubleshooting, see the Global-Active Device User Guide.

The following configuration is required:
  • The local and remote storage systems must be VSP One Block 85.
  • The storage microversion for the local and remote storage systems must be A0‑05‑40‑00/13 or later.

If you need to create a GAD pair using a configuration that does not meet these requirements, use another management tool.

  1. From the navigation tree, select Remote Protection > Global-Active Device.
  2. Click Create Global-Active Device Consistency Group and Pairs.
  3. In the Create Global-Active Device Consistency Group and Pairs wizard, enter the following information:
    1. On the Connect to Remote Storage System page, select the remote storage system, enter the username and password, and then click Next.
    2. On the Configure the Pair page, enter the following information, and then click Next.
      • Consistency Group ID: An identifier representing the consistency group.
      • Remote Path Group ID: Identifies a configured remote path group used for communication.
      • Mirror Unit Number: A system-defined internal mirroring unit used for replication.
      • Quorum Disk ID: A configured quorum disk used to monitor the pair.
      • I/O Preference Volume for failed remote path: Controls host I/O routing during remote path failure.
      • Copy Speed: A set of performance levels that balance copy throughput with host workload demands. Available options are:
        • Faster: Maximizes copy speed.
        • Medium: Balanced setting for copy speed and server I/O performance (Standard).
        • Slow: Prioritizes server I/O while allowing moderate copy speed.
        • Slower: Prioritizes server I/O.

In the Global-Active Device User Guide, these copy speed options are defined as performance levels from 1 to 4 (Faster = 4, Medium = 3, Slow = 2, and Slower = 1).

    3. On the Select Primary Volumes page, choose at least one primary volume, and then click Next. Do not select volumes with the Data Direct Map or T10 PI attributes enabled.
    4. On the Configure Secondary Volumes page, enter the following information:
      • Select the pool for creating the secondary volumes.
      • Choose the servers to which the volumes will be attached.
      • Optionally specify the start and end volume IDs.

The secondary volume is configured with the same capacity saving settings and volume name as the volume selected as the primary volume.

  4. Click Submit.
After clicking Submit, the following APIs run in sequence. A notification is issued after each step:

If a failure occurs during Step 2 (server assignment) or Step 3 (consistency group and pair creation), the secondary volume created in Step 1 remains on the secondary system and becomes unnecessary. Note the secondary volume ID in the notification and delete it.

  1. Creates the secondary volume, and the notification includes the secondary volume ID.
  2. Assigns a server to the secondary volume.
  3. Creates the consistency group and pair.
