Creating a PII guardrail

Create a PII guardrail and apply it to one or more models.

  • Make sure you have Administrator permission.
  • Decide whether the guardrail should apply at input, output, or both.
  • Identify the models that will use the guardrail.
  1. Navigate to the Admin section, and then select Open Guardrails.


  2. Select the Manage tab.
  3. Click Add Guardrail.


  4. Select PII as the validator type.


  5. In the configuration page, enter the following:


    Field Description
    Name Provide a unique name for the guardrail configuration.
    Description Enter a short explanation of the guardrail purpose.
    On fail Select the action to take when the system detects unsafe content.
    Issue message Enter the message to display when validation fails.
  6. Select the PII information to detect, such as email or credit card number and then click Next.
  7. On the Test page, enter text that includes PII, such as an email address or credit card number, and then click Run Test.
  8. Review the results to confirm that the detected PII is masked. If needed, adjust the configuration and test again. Then, click Next.


  9. On the Map Models page, select one or more LLMs from the list.
  10. For each selected model, select where the guardrail should apply:


    • Input: checks and filters user messages before they reach the model.
    • Output: checks and filters the model response before it is shown to the user.
    • Both: validates content in both directions.
  11. Click Done.
