If an operation to configure a storage cluster, add storage nodes, or replace storage nodes is unsuccessful, you must reperform the operation later. If switchover of spare nodes is unsuccessful, you might have to perform storage node replacement to restore the target storage nodes. In this case, depending on the execution conditions of operations and processes, you might be able to skip storage software installation and setup of each storage node, including their subsequent steps. This section describes the procedure for determining whether you need to reperform storage software installation and setup of each storage node for the storage nodes on which operations are in progress or processes did not succeed.

For each operation-target storage node, reperform the storage software installation and storage node setup tasks, according to the procedure described in this section.

The following table shows the storage nodes for which you must use the described procedure to determine whether you need to reperform storage software installation and setup of each storage node, for each operation in progress or process that did not succeed.

Operation in progress or process that did not succeed

Storage nodes for the procedures in this section

Configuring a storage cluster

All storage nodes

Adding storage nodes

All storage nodes to be added

Replacing storage nodes

All storage nodes to be replaced1

Switching spare nodes

All storage nodes to be replaced2

1 Storage nodes can only be replaced one at a time irrespective of storage cluster configuration.

2 You need to perform the described procedure only if you are requested to replace storage nodes in an event log message or in this document.

Perform the following procedure for all target storage nodes.

If a procedure step must be performed for multiple storage nodes, you can perform the step for multiple storage nodes in parallel.

CAUTION:

In a storage cluster in which the spare node function is used, performing spare node switchover automatically switches the physical server of a storage node. When performing operations or maintenance for the physical server of a storage node, confirm the following to verify that the target physical server is correct.

  • The physical server of a spare node is applied to a storage node. When physical server switchover completes, an event log is output for notification.

  • You can obtain the connection information about the BMCs mounted on the physical servers of storage nodes by performing the procedure described in Obtaining BMC information about individual storage nodes (Bare metal) in the VSP One SDS Block and SDS Cloud System Administration. By using the obtained information, you can connect to the BMC on the storage node and verify the physical server information of a storage node. If there is an error in the settings, an event log is output. For the BMC setting verification procedure, see Verifying the spare node function settings (Bare metal) in the VSP One SDS Block and SDS Cloud System Administration.

  1. Verify whether the target storage node meets either of the following conditions.

If the target storage node meets neither of the following conditions, go to step 2.

If it meets either of the following conditions, you must perform installation of storage software and setup of each storage node. Go to step 4 and perform these tasks.

    • The user is prompted to reperform installation of storage software and setup of each storage node by the message that was output to the console interface when configuration of a storage cluster was unsuccessful or by the event log record that was output when storage node replacement was unsuccessful.

    • Storage node replacement was unsuccessful and "InstallationFailed" is displayed by the VSP One SDS Block Administrator as the status of the storage node subject to maintenance.

  2. Verify whether you can log in to the target storage node as a setup user. Also, if you are following this procedure after storage node replacement was unsuccessful, verify whether the storage node can be recovered by performing storage node maintenance recovery.

If Login:setup is displayed on the first line of the console interface login screen for the target storage node, only the setup user can log in. In this case, log in as the setup user. If the target storage node is powered off, turn it on first.

If you are following this procedure after storage node replacement was unsuccessful and Login: is displayed on the first line of the login screen of the console interface instead of Login:setup, you can recover the storage node as described in Performing maintenance recovery for storage nodes (Bare metal) in the VSP One SDS Block and SDS Cloud System Administration without reperforming installation of storage software and setup of each storage node. In this case, skip performing the subsequent steps in this section, return to the step of judgment (in the flowchart in Action to be taken for a failure that occurred when replacing storage nodes (Bare metal)) before which you were instructed to reference this section, and then take action based on the judgment that storage node maintenance recovery can be used for recovery. If the conditions are not met, you need to perform storage node replacement for storage node recovery.

If login as the setup user in this step is successful, go to step 3.

When the conditions in which recovery by storage node maintenance recovery is possible are not met, and if Login:setup and a username are not displayed on the first line of the login screen or login as the setup user is unsuccessful, you need to install storage software to the target storage node and set up each storage node. Go to step 4, and perform installation of storage software and storage node setup for each target storage node.

This instruction also applies in the case where login is unsuccessful because, for example, the setup user password is incorrect.

  3. On the Top menu screen of the console interface, confirm the value of Storage node status. Then, determine whether installation of storage software and setup of each storage node are necessary, based on the confirmed value, according to the following table.

However, if failure recurs even when you reperform the operation according to the following table, go to step 4, because it is necessary to perform installation of storage software and setup of each storage node.

Restart the storage node from BMC once and see if the value of Storage node status changes, and if it does, make a decision based on the value. If the value of Storage node status does not change after restarting the storage node, contact customer support.

    1. If you need to set up each storage node from the "ClusterSetupTemporaryStopped" state, perform the following steps to transition to the "NodeSettingCompleted" state before setting up each storage node.

    1. In the Top menu screen of the console interface, select Cancel cluster setup (for this storage node).

    2. In the Cancel cluster setup (for this storage node) screen, select Submit.

  4. If it is determined that you must reperform installation of storage software for the target storage nodes, do so according to Installing the storage software in the VSP One SDS Block Bare Metal Setup and Configuration.

If it is determined that you do not need to reperform installation of storage software for the target storage node, go to the next step.

  5. If it is determined that you need to reperform setup of each target storage node, do so according to Setting up each storage node in the VSP One SDS Block Bare Metal Setup and Configuration.

If it is determined that you do not need to reperform setup of each target storage node, go to the next step.

  6. When you have performed the procedure up to step 5 for all target storage nodes, the procedure is complete.
