  • Make sure that an Enterprise Virtual Server (EVS) is created.
  • Make sure that a file system is created and mounted.
  • Make sure that the user and group quotas are created.
Create a virtual volume from a file system to allocate and control directories for users or groups, including setting access control at the directory level.

The following video will walk you through creating a virtual volume.

Video

  1. Go to Provisioning > Capacity > Virtual Volumes, and then click Create Virtual Volume.
  2. On the Configurations page, complete the following information, and then click Next.
    1. Select the EVS and file system where you want to create a virtual volume.
    2. Enter the name for the virtual volume.
      • The name can be up 128 characters.
      • Do not use the characters ?*=+[];:/,<>\| in the name.
      • Do not use the name A$ because it is reserved for the Windows Event Viewer.
    3. If you require an SMB share with the same name as this virtual volume, select the Create an SMB Share with the same name as the Virtual Volume checkbox.
    4. If you require an NFS export with the same name as the virtual volume, select the Create an NFS Export with the same name as the Virtual Volume checkbox.
    5. If there is a possibility that this new NFS export will overlap an existing export, select the Allow exports to overlap checkbox.
    6. In the Path box, enter the path to the directory at the root of the virtual volume or click Browse and navigate to the file system path. If the directory is new and does not exist, select Create path if it does not exist.
    7. (Optional) Enter email addresses in Email Contacts.
      Email lists are limited to a maximum of 512 characters. When the virtual volume reaches quota limits, the email contacts added here are notified. If no email contacts are specified for the virtual volume, the server generates events for quota warnings.
  3. On the Set Defaults page, set the User Quota Defaults and Group Quota Defaults, and then click Next.
    If you do not want to set the default user and group quotas, click Skip.
    1. In Usage, enter the usage limit of the virtual volume for a user or a group. Additionally, select the usage in KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, or PiB from the list.
    2. In File Count, set the file count limit of the virtual volume for a user or a group.
    3. Set the Hard Limit toggle to Yes to ensure that the usage limit or the file count is not exceeded or accept the default No, which does not enforce the limit.
      If the toggle is set to No, a warning alert is triggered when the limit is exceeded.
    4. Set the Alert Warning value to trigger a warning alert when the usage or file count limit reaches this value.
    5. Set the Alert Severe value to trigger a severe alert when the usage or file count limit reaches this value.
    6. Select the Log Quota Events in the managed servers Event Log checkbox to log all user or group quota events in the event log for the managed server.

  4. If the Path Permissions page is provided, set access control at the user and group level for the directory entered on the Configurations page, and then click Next.
    This page appears only if the user is logged into File Administrator as a user assigned to one of the following roles:
    • allow_access_to_fs_path_info
    • allow_access_to_fs_path_info_read_only

    Configuring access control for the directory provides granular access by users and groups to prevent root-level unrestricted access. You can define access per user and group and specify allowed operations (read, write, modify, and delete).

    If you do not want to set access control for the directory, click Skip.

    In the Volume Path and Security pane, the directory path and security mode is shown. The available modes are Mixed and Unix. The security mode is inherited from the underlying EVS or the file system on which the virtual volume is created. The access control configuration of the directory path varies based on the security mode. For example, if the security mode is Mixed, both Windows and UNIX rules apply.

    To set the directory path permissions:

    • If the security mode is Mixed, complete the following information:
      1. In the Path Permissions pane, set the owner and the primary group for the directory path. You can accept the default values or you can change them. For example, if you chose Create path if it does not exist on the Configurations page and require different values for the new path.
      2. In the Permission Details pane, click Add Path Permission to create a permission.
      3. Enter a name for the permission and specify the inheritance type.
      4. Set the permissions to Allow or Deny.
      5. Click Add Permission. To cancel, click Discard.
      6. (Optional) To edit a permission, click the edit icon. To delete a permission, click the delete icon.
    • If the security mode is Unix, complete the following information:
      1. In the Path Permissions pane, set the owner and the primary group for the directory path. You can accept the default values or you can change them. For example, if you chose Create path if it does not exist on the Configurations page and require different values for the new path.

        The read-only mode value is dependent on the octal permissions that are set for Owner Rights, Group Rights, and Other Rights.

      2. Click the edit icon for each permission to configure the rights, and then click Save Changes. To cancel, click Discard.
  5. On the Summary page, review the virtual volume configurations, and then click Finish. Alternatively, you can add another virtual volume by clicking Create and add another.
