The following table lists and describes the possible purposes of QoS upper-limit control, lower-limit control, and priority control functions.

Type of QoS control

Volume or QoS group

Purposes

Upper-limit control

Volume

  • Provides the upper-limit value of the throughput that a public cloud provider can provide to the tenant as one of the service requirements.
  • When I/O requests are concentrated on specific volumes, the upper limit can be set for the throughput of each volume to suppress the degradation of the throughput of other volumes.

QoS group

  • Provides the upper-limit value of the throughput for an entire group of volumes instead of for an individual volume by grouping the multiple volumes to be assigned to the tenant for which the public cloud provider provides multiple services (uses multiple volumes) into a QoS group.
  • Suppresses degradation in the throughput of QoS groups that are not the target QoS group, and in the throughput of volumes that do not belong to the specified QoS group.
Lower-limit control

Volume

  • Provides a lower limit of the throughput that a public cloud provider can provide to a tenant as one of the service requirements.
  • Enables the appropriate throughput for individual volumes.
  • Enables maintaining the appropriate throughput of individual volumes by suppressing the throughput of a volume that exceeds the lower limit and prioritizing the throughput of a volume that does not reach the lower limit.

QoS priority control

Volume

  • Provides the service performances that a public cloud provider can provide to a tenant.
  • Enables the priority setting for I/O processing on individual volumes.

QoS group

  • Provides a variety of service performances that a public cloud provider can provide to a tenant that handles multiple services by using multiple volumes.
  • Enables the priority setting for I/O processing on the volumes in a QoS group.
