By using ShadowImage, you can replicate data volumes in your storage system. You can create pairs of volumes to be replicated and manage the status of pairs. You can also perform operations on pairs in copy groups.

Note:
  • If there are numerous ShadowImage pairs, the page display process might take a long time, or processing might not end. In this case, use Command Control Interface.
  • If you specify a consistency group when creating pairs, you can simultaneously handle all pairs that have the same consistency group ID.

The copy source volume is the primary volume, and the copy destination volume is the secondary volume. After a ShadowImage pair is created, all the data from the primary volume is copied to the secondary volume; this process is referred to as the initial copy. During the initial copy, data can be loaded or written to the primary volume. After the initial copy is completed, the update data on the primary volume is asynchronously copied to the secondary volume.

  1. Initial environment configuration
    1. Creating ShadowImage pairs
    2. (Optional) Splitting ShadowImage pairs

ShadowImage pairs maintain their pair status until the pairs are split. When you split a pair, the secondary volume guarantees the data of the primary volume at the time of split. After the split is completed, servers can read from or write to the secondary volume.

After splitting a pair, you can copy the update data and return to a paired state by either resynchronizing from the primary volume to the secondary volume or restoring from the secondary volume to the primary volume, depending on your needs.

  2. Backing up data
    1. Resychronizing ShadowImage pairs
    2. Splitting ShadowImage pairs
  3. Restoring data
    1. Restoring ShadowImage pairs
    2. Splitting ShadowImage pairs

By using VSP One Block Administrator, you can perform resynchronization manually. If you perform restoration, data on the primary volume will be overwritten, so you must perform restoration after prohibiting access from servers or taking other necessary measures. For details on ShadowImage, see the ShadowImage User Guide.

Note: By using the REST API to perform resynchronization periodically, you can keep the data on the secondary volume up to date. For details on the API, see the REST API Reference for VSP One Block Administrator .
