You can create a pool by specifying drives.

Pools for thin provisioning are virtual areas in a storage system that are associated with multiple drives. Thin provisioning provides virtual volumes to a server and uses the actual capacity from a pool when a server makes a write request.

When you create a pool, you can create an encrypted pool. For details on the Encryption License Key functionality such as the encryption specifications and system requirements, see the Encryption License Key User Guide.

If you create a pool in VSP One Block Administrator, a recommended configuration is displayed from among the various different configurations supported by the storage system. This configuration consists of the combination of drives that enables you to use drive space most effectively.

CAUTION:
  • If the usage exceeds the depletion threshold set on a pool that is used to store differential-data snapshots, all of the snapshots may become unusable. If this happens, you can change the depletion threshold by editing the pool.
  • Dynamic Drive Protection (DDP) is a drive distributed RAID function.

    DDP distributes the spare space to each drive, eliminating the need for dedicated spare drives. In addition, DDP distributes the load of rebuilding to all drives, reducing the time for rebuilding.

  • Make sure that there is an available drive configured in the storage system.
  • Check the pool name and whether to enable encryption.

    To specify the configuration of the pool being created, also obtain the following information:

    • Drive information (drive type, drive interface, and capacity)
    • RAID level

      We recommend that you unify the RAID level within the pool to RAID6 or RAID5.

    • Number of drives to use
  • Make sure that the user performing the procedure has been assigned the Storage Administrator (Provisioning) role.
  1. From the navigation tree, select Storage > Pools.
  2. Click Create Pool.
  3. Specify a value for Pool Name and whether to create an encrypted pool. You can encrypt a pool if the Encryption License Key license is enabled. To accept the recommended configuration, click Submit to create a pool.

    Dynamic Drive Protection is always enabled.

  4. To change the configuration, change the values for RAID level and Drives Specified.

    Refer to the following examples when specifying this setting:

    • For RAID5:

      You can specify 5 or more drives, up to the maximum number supported by the system. However, if the specified number of drives is one more than a multiple of 12, the system will implement one fewer drive than specified to optimize capacity efficiency.

      • 5 to 12 drives (12 × 1)

        You can specify these values.

      • 13 drives

        Do not specify this value. Specify 12 drives instead.

      • 17 to 24 drives (12 × 2)

        You can specify these values.

      • 25 drives

        Do not specify this value. Specify 24 drives instead.

    • For RAID6:

      You can specify 9 or more drives, up to the maximum number of drives that can be installed. However, if the specified number of drives is one more than a multiple of 36, the system will subtract one drive from the specified number for capacity efficiency reasons.

      • 9 to 36 drives (36 × 1)

        You can specify these values.

      • 37 drives

        Do not specify this value. Specify 36 instead.

      • 38 to 72 drives (36 × 2)

        You can specify these values.

      • 73 drives

        Do not specify this value. Specify 72 instead.

    After changing the number of drives, click Check. After checking the possible combinations, click Submit to create a pool.
